One of the biggest steps when you’re leaving home to go to university is deciding what to take with you. You may find you need to go out and buy a load of new items for your new life! It can feel overwhelming when you’re moving away from home for an extended period of time but there’s definitely no need to panic. With careful planning, you can make sure you’ve got all the essential items you need for your new life! Our ultimate university packing list is here to get you started.
Kitchen Items
This is particularly important when you’re moving into self-catered accommodation because you’ll need pots, pans and utensils to assist you in your cooking adventures! You’ll also need plates, cups and cutlery so that you can actually eat. Don’t forget the more rogue kitchen items that may come in handy, like a cheese grater, a sieve or a garlic crusher.

Bedding and Towels
You might think this is pretty obvious, but it’s definitely one you shouldn’t forget! You need to be able to sleep in comfort and take showers in your new home. Make sure to check the size of your new bed - you don’t want to end up with bed sheets that don’t fit properly.

Books and Stationery
You are going to university to study, after all, so it’s likely that you’re going to need textbooks for your course, as well as notebooks, paper and pens to take to lecturers. Whether you like it simple, or you love fancy stationery with different colours and patterns, just make sure you’ve got the supplies you need.

Toiletries
Remembering your toiletry bag is another important step in the packing process. You’ll need shower gel, shampoo and all the items for washing, as well as any medicines, pills and creams that you rely on. You might also want to take a mini first-aid kit with you, in case of emergencies.

Food Supplies
Many people choose to do their food shop after they arrive, but it is important to consider it in the packing process so that you have food for your first few days at university. You won’t be able to pack any fresh stuff, obviously, but you might want to consider buying tins, spices and cupboard food in advance so that you’re prepared.

Important Documents
This is something that can easily slip your mind, so remember to bring important documents with you to university in case you need them. This includes your passport, driving licence, national insurance number, your official university letters and your student finance paperwork. There’s a lot of admin involved in the first week of uni so make sure you’re prepared!

Laptop and Entertainment
It’s unlikely that a student would forget their laptop but this is pretty essential for uni! You won’t be studying all the time, however, so you might like to bring other forms of entertainment such as books, a games console or speakers. And don’t forget your phone and laptop chargers!

Decoration and Personal Items

One of the best parts about moving into new accommodation is making it personal to you. You may want to bring photographs, posters and cushions to add a bit of character to your new bedroom. Remember to check the rules with your accommodation provider - many won’t allow sticky tack on the walls but have designated places where you can put pictures up.

Hopefully this university packing list has given you an idea of all the things you need to remember when you’re moving to university. Is there anything else you’re thinking of taking? Let us know!
