Think you’ve missed the boat if you don’t head straight from college to uni? These days, that can’t be any further from the case. The stereotypical student may be late teens, early 20s, but the world of higher education is opening up more and more to mature students from all ages.
Don’t believe us? Have a look at this incredible article from the BBC.
The article follows Law students at the University of West London, Maureen Matthews (79) and Craig Surujballi (84).
These two show that there’s no upper age limit when it comes to education, and that mature students can be just as successful and valuable as those who go straight after taking their A-Levels.
There’s nothing wrong with taking time out from education and gaining some life experience in the meantime. The worst thing you can do is feel pressured and rush into the uni experience like a headless chicken, because guess what? Headless chickens are more likely to hate the course/uni/location and drop out. And that’s a waste of everyone’s time and money.

You might have a rough end-goal in mind, but don’t panic about how quickly you should be reaching your destination. Take a leaf out of Maureen and Craig’s books, and take some time to enjoy the ride.
