Ever get the feeling the world’s only ever talking about uni? You’re not alone, even teachers are feeling like there’s not enough support and knowledge when it comes to helping students down the apprenticeship or degree apprenticeship route.

That’s why Tes (once the Times Education Supplement, that pumps out regular info and news for school teachers) launched a campaign called #InspiringApprentices to boost awareness and understanding of the career path.

The campaign was launched to document the thoughts and experiences of young apprentices in the UK.
Even though it’s aimed at giving teachers better understanding of apprenticeships, it’s jam-packed with insights that are ideal for any student thinking about taking the route.

The blog posts follow the stories of a range of young people on loads of different career paths, working for different employers, across a range of ages, genders, ethnicities and backgrounds to give varied representation of experiences.

In the mini blog-style packages, Tes allows young people to shout about the highs and lows of apprentice life, like…
  • Airbus engineering apprentice, Aaron, who ended up choosing an apprenticeship over Oxbridge
  • Business Administration apprentice, Daisy, who’d always presumed apprenticeships were ‘minimum-wage and manual jobs’
  • Academic high-flyer and digital marketing apprentice, Morgan, who’d lost her passion for traditional studying
  • Sri Lankan university drop-out turned apprentice, Matty, who thrived in a hands-on environment

Have a read around a few articles to get a feel of the different schemes, employers and experiences out there. Maybe it’s not for you, but you’ll never regret ten minutes of reading and a bit more insight into what it’s really like to be an apprentice.

No stereotypes here, just the real deal.

Feel like you need a bit more info and advice on Apprenticeships?

Head over to the Push website to read about the different options available to you, including traditional apprenticeship schemes and degree apprenticeships, where your time is split between on the job training and university or college study.
