Learning Objectives

- Explore the wider possibilities that a young person can choose to pursue at 18
- Discussions around what it means to make a proactive, informed choice (and the barriers that stop us from doing this)
- Understand the differences between public sector and private sector work, and services and manufacturing sectors
- Explore more flexible and alternative degree (and degree-level) pathways, that don't involve full-time study

Session Description
Only approximately 30% of 18 year olds choose to go to university directly after school or college. This session helps support students to consider alternatives (or simply gain perspectives) to university at 18 - even if they are already considering a degree. We explore the reasons why we make choices, what our own barriers might be, and the alternative routes to employability we each need to build: a mixture of knowledge, training and experiences. We help students to feel confident on the alternatives to a traditional degree route, covering higher and degree apprenticeships, on-the-job training, internships, placements and volunteering, entrepreneurship and more flexible / remote learning. We support them in understanding the differences between public sector and private sector work, and services and manufacturing sectors. We talk about sectors that will be important in the future, and give tips on exploring what industries are growing in the students' area.
