Read on for Push's best advice on breaking into and getting ahead in the terrifying adult world of... ugh... work.
employment skills vs employability
Employability is a long word, and it has a cheeky 'Y' in the middle that everyone forgets about when spelling it. But the irony is that asking 'why' you want a particular career could really be the game changer when seeking a job you love, over something just to do.
First things first – 'employability' is completely different from 'employment skills', and the media and employers interchange these two terms when they shouldn't as it confuses young people more than ever:
People make employability sound scary and overcomplicated, but we tell is like it is: employability is adding more value than you take away, and feeling valued in return.
First things first – 'employability' is completely different from 'employment skills', and the media and employers interchange these two terms when they shouldn't as it confuses young people more than ever:
- Employment skills are your "what to wear" or "what to say" or "how to fill out a CV". In other words, the practicalities of getting a job. This is nothing to do with how you feel about a job and why you'd want to keep going back after you get it. We can help you with all the interview and CV malarkey (the easy part), but employment skills only help you get a job, they don't help you keep a job (harder) and get on in a job (harder still).
- Employability is an idea: a deeper understanding of what it truly means to earn money (and receive other lovely life rewards like respect, helping people, recognition, creativity) in exchange for bringing your A Game to the workplace each day.
People make employability sound scary and overcomplicated, but we tell is like it is: employability is adding more value than you take away, and feeling valued in return.
