St Edmund's College, Cambridge

Plonked 10 minutes' schlep from the city centre, students at St Edmund’s (‘Eddies’ to its chums) are either mature (in age, not necessarily attitude) or affiliated, so work takes precedence over binge drinking. Students are fiercely proud to be Eddies with a stronger sense of college loyalty than many Cambridgeites exhibit. Socialising tends to take place elsewhere however, simply because there's more fun to be had in the heart of Cambridge. It’s friendly, with a close and internationally diverse community and a bop that attracts Cambridge’s more discerning ents socialites. The advantage of being located a little way out of the centre is that there's plenty of green space to stretch out in and a tower offering a pigeon's eye view of Cambridge. While the College has been around since the end of the 19th century, it’s only been a full card-carrying college of the University since 1965. It’s one of the six graduate colleges but slips in around 120 mature undergrads too.

Small and underused library; 15 computers plus wireless internet around campus;

Eddie's Bar - cosy with decent wine, extendable for bops; annual May Ball. Formal hall held most Friday evenings £8, £14 guest nights, limited capacity so booking in advance is a must.

Buzzy music society and choir plus a handful of other societies; Catholic chapel; Common Room; student-run club room.

Shared boat club with Trinity Hall, some success at Bumps (intercollegiate rowing comp); 11 sports clubs in total; fitness suite, gym, tennis, table tennis and croquet facilities.

Availability of college accommodation is an issue, some will be disappointed. Accommodation available in 5 bands - 5 being the newest with en-suite, 1 is the cheapest but still pretty decent. Rooms for 200 students (£90-130 a week); some family maisonettes for two adults and two children; web access in all rooms; a third en-suite. Cooking facilities are limited, most accommodation is fully catered but the food is more likely to prompt grumbles than rumbles.

The CR has a welfare officer, international officer, LGBT officer and women's officer. Induction loop in the library; large print available on request; easy access for wheelchair users. Academic prizes and scholarships, plus a hardship fund are up for the plundering.

FAMOUS ALUMNI
