Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge

Sidney’s one of the prettier colleges, with red-brick just about complementing the grander late 16th-century stuff. It’s small enough to be undaunting, but big enough to avoid being stifling. And best of all, Sainsbury’s is about 20m away. There’s an active JCR, some of the best accommodation in Cambridge and students have a high profile in University drama and Rag. It’s also one of the least stuffy places in town – around 65% of students are from state schools, it was one of the first colleges to let girls in and the Master is a mistress.
