Size of university Big means better facilities but there's a danger that it'll seem too impersonal. Smaller means friendlier or suffocating depending on your mood.

Age of university Older means more history, more stability, more facilities and maybe a better reputation, while newer means vigour, fresh approaches and (often) purpose-built.

Type of university Do you want a reputable course in a well-known institution that goes about things the traditional way or something fresh and funky (perhaps in a concrete block) and with maybe more vocational courses?

Sex ratio Do we really need to explain this one? You either want to be surrounded by more blokes or more women, let your hormones decide. Desperate Housewives or Californication?

Country or city campus If you find the pastoral delights of the countryside duller than bag of spanners, then you may want the bustling anonymity of a concrete jungle instead. Remember, though, not all towns are the same.

How big a local city Larger cities have more to offer but can be foreboding and alienating. A smaller town might give enough of what you need, but nothing more.

Split sites Split-site universities have a different feel to those based in one place. It can mean the best of both worlds  a small college in a bigger institution  but more often it can mean facilities spread too thin and/or lots of travelling around.

Average UCAS points Lower UCAS points means you can get in with lower grades, but that's not always a reflection on the quality of the course. It may just be a less popular subject. Higher points means you need higher grades and may mean more competition, but if you make it, you'll know other students will be high flyers too.
