Splattered over one residential and four academic sites is UWIC – that’s the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. It provided a location for the filming of Doctor Who, fact fans. It opens its doors to a whole bunch of different students, which means a diverse social mix. On the other hand, it means a lot of students are older, career-minded and, while up for a laugh, not into anything crazy. Major campus investment is giving UWIC a significant facelift...more detail Almost all courses are vocational – lots of students do work placements alongside study. Teacher training, Sports and Design are all big hitters...more on academic. The SU runs three bars and the city’s an up-and-coming place, much like UWIC and has some major venues (the Millennium Stadium) as well as a thriving theatre, kebab and club scene ...more on entertainment. Compared to it's neighbour Cardiff University there aren't many clubs and societies, but all you need is nine friends to start your own... more on the SU. Amazingly, UWIC is often in the top five of the sports league, coping superhumanly with limited funding but impressively modern facilities...more on sports. Halls are a mile or less from the main site and the UWIC RIDER buses zip between them. Living out’s cheap compared to other big cities...more on housing. Oodles of cash available in the form of bursaries and scholarships... more on welfare.

Woohoo: 'The more the merrier' open door policy
Boohoo: Not much to keep the non-sporty occupied.
