The pre uni job shop
Imagine you're a bar or restaurant owner. Imagine it's September. Imagine the two thousand students who suddenly appear in your city wanting jobs. You can't give everyone a job, so what do the rest of the students do? They keep on looking until they find something, anything, that will pay the bills.
Despite all the preparations for university, most people never really consider getting a job until they actually get there in September. But if you wait until then, the odds are you'll be competing with hundreds of other students who also need jobs. Not me, though. I had a brainwave.
I was just mooching around on my computer and I decided to look at the types of jobs going in Edinburgh. I had a search on google and found a listing for a youth worker in an after school club in the city, among other things. I must have applied for about five jobs, not really thinking I'd get anywhere, when I got a phone call for an interview. Of course, they were in Edinburgh and I was in Liverpool: but this wasn't a problem because the guy offered me a telephone interview. I had a good chat with two interviewers and they offered me the job after fifteen minutes on the phone. Part time. Six pounds an hour. Sorted.
Now, they know that there is a chance I won't get into Edinburgh with my results. But at least if I do get in I have a job ready and waiting. If not, then I just call and let them know I can't work for them. Easy peasy.
I reckon everyone who knows they will have to work through university should at least have a look what is on offer. If you can beat the rush and sort your job out before you even get there, then that's one weight off your mind, isn't it? Just make sure you don't sign a contract until you know for certain whether or not you're going.
