Edinburgh-bound
I’ve been to Cambridge, Lancaster and Bangor to look at the universities, and yet I still managed to persuade my mum to drive me all the way to Edinburgh to look at what I thought might be my top choice.
After five hours in the car and a sleep-over in Carlisle, I finally set my sights on the hilly streets and stone buildings of Edinburgh. ‘It’s the Oxford and Cambridge of Scotland,’ I’ve been told. Then another five hours back home. All for just two hours in the city – but it was my favourite trip yet. We got there late, – frozen and worried that we’d missed our chance on the student-led tour. It turned out the tours ran like buses, leaving every hour and, having missed our slot, we could just hop on the next one. Meanwhile, we caught our breath and warmed our fingers in the nearest coffee shop.
The tour took about an hour and we saw everything on the main campus through the eyes of a fourth-year student who was sorry she had to leave. I asked her if there were any reasons she regretted choosing Edinburgh. She couldn’t come up with a single one.
The buildings are so old and majestic, apparently they still keep finding long forgotten rooms in the student union. The people seemed friendly – not a snobby nose among them – and the atmosphere immediately felt like a second home to me.
I got back to my real home on the Saturday, exhausted and fed up with travelling. Even so, I hit the UCAS website straight away to edit my application: Edinburgh’s now my top choice and I want to be sure I get in. The campaign starts here.
