e-Push: January 2008

Happy new year!

January’s a big month for uni applications – there’s deadlines, interviews and offers.

And even for those who aren’t doing the whole UCAS thing till 2009, the new year means the start gun on the process has been fired.

Read on for what needs doing this month…

THIS MONTH

If you’re in Year 13…
If you haven’t clicked ‘enter’ on that application, you’d better handcuff yourself to the keyboard. There’s less than a week to go. UCAS applications need to be done and dusted by 15th January. Of course, there’s nothing to stop you sending it in later, but then it’ll marked as late and that’s the equivalent of getting an acne outbreak just before a hot date. More on UCAS applications…

If your application has been safely sat in UCAS’s in-tray for a few weeks now, the offers or interview invites may already be cluttering the doormat. You don’t need to respond to any offers till you’ve heard from them all, but you may want to read Push’s tips on juggling your options…

Many unis don’t bother with interviews these days, but if you get the call, not only is it your chance to impress, it’s an opportunity to scout the terrain. Read Push’s guide to interview skills and dressing to impress.

If you’re in Year 12…
Okay, so you’ve only been doing AS or Highers for a few months, but by the autumn, you’ll want to be polishing your application. In the summer, the unis will be on holiday and next term, there’s big exams. That means this term is the right time to start hunting for a you-shaped uni and course. Push will pave your way with a fluffy red carpet and perhaps the best place to start is Push’s uniquely powerful uni chooser…

NEW THIS MONTH AT PUSH.CO.UK

Push has adopted a blogger. Her name's Kate and she's on the UCAS trail.

Over the next year, she'll be posting reports from the applications frontline, despatches from the exam trenches and eventually, she hopes, communiques from the world of studentdom.

IN THE NEWS

Unis to blacklist ‘doss’ courses
Some so-called ‘top’ unis have said that they want applicants to have at least two traditional academic A levels or equivalent. In future, they may ignore what they consider to be ‘soft’ subjects – such as media studies, business studies, dance, film studies, home economics and music technology. Read more…

Just one degree each
The Government plans to axe funding for students taking a second undergraduate degree. The idea is to redirect the money to support more people who haven’t got any degree yet. It won’t affect postgrads, but, understandably, Open Uni and Birkbeck who specialise in students returning to education, are particularly upset.
