Birkbeck’s a bit special, for better or worse, it doesn't provide your average student experience. The College was originally founded as the London Mechanics’ Institution in a pub on the Strand. Nowadays it's a stark redbrick construction close to Trafalgar Square, cosying up under the umbrella of the University of London ...more detail Almost all Birks are part-time, most of them mature (over-21s need no formal qualifications to apply) and courses have an excellent reputation. Most Birkbeck teaching occurs in the twilight hours between six and nine ... more on academic  Study is what Birkbeck’s all about, everything else is just icing. There’s no provision for sport, the entertainment scene is limited and there’s no accommodation ... more on housing but the bar stays busy for sneaky tipples between lectures... more on entertainment Hardship funds and College Awards give much needed aid to the cashless... more on welfare.

Woohoo: Ideal for those who are older and looking to get wiser
Boo: Not a lot going on outside lectures
